Asia dominates world’s busiest air routes as global premium travel expands

Asia-Pacific routes dominate the latest ranking of the world's busiest airport pairs, according to the International Air Transport Association's 2025 World Air Transport Statistics.
The Jeju–Seoul Gimpo route remained the world's busiest, carrying 13.3 million passengers. All ten of the leading airport pairs were domestic routes, and only Jeddah–Riyadh was outside Asia-Pacific.
Premium travel continued to grow
International premium-class traffic reached 109.7 million passengers in 2025, an increase of 4.5% from the previous year. Premium travellers represented 5.5% of all international passengers. Europe remained the largest premium market by volume, while North America and the Middle East recorded the highest premium shares.
The country data also illustrate changing growth patterns. The United States remained the largest passenger market with 890.1 million passengers, while China recorded 776.1 million. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam were among the fastest-growing markets.
Fleet composition is changing
IATA's figures show rapid growth in flights operated by newer aircraft types. Airbus A350 activity was 117.4% above 2019 levels, while Boeing 787 flights rose 40.8%. The Airbus A220 recorded particularly rapid expansion from a smaller base.
